The Waltz is a smooth dance that travels in a circular pattern counter clockwise around the dance floor. It is characterized by its rise and fall action. The Waltz was first known as an Austro-German folk dance called the Landler. The music of Johann Strauss helped to popularize the Waltz.
A vaudevillian named Harry Fox embellished his act with a “trot” around the stage with several chorus girls. This new trot was the beginning of what we call today the Foxtrot. The Foxtrot is a smooth flowing dance style with much grace and elegance.
Jive or Swing originated by the teenagers in the United States in the 1920’s to music that was jazzy with syncopation and a kick beat styling that made one want to dance.
Rumba originated in Cuba among the slaves that were imported from South America and the Caribbean. Originally the Rumba was a very fast and erotic dance. The Rumba came to the United States early in the 1920s. It is believed that Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire slowed the dance down and brought it into the popular dance that we know today.
Cha Cha is the name of a Latin American dance that originated in Cuba. The dance is similar to the Mambo and the Rumba and was originally known as the “Triple Mambo". In the 1950’s Enrique Jarrin, a Cuban composer, discovered this dance and developed more variations and footwork. At the beginning the Cha Cha was originally danced only to Latin sounding music. However, over time any 4/4 type of music with a good beat was used for the Cha Cha.
Slow Two Step originated in California and in social dancing is known as Night Club Two Step. The addition of this rhythm allowed dancers to enjoy a slower tempo of music that had not been available to Round Dancing. It is a smooth relaxed dance.
Bolero is an American Ballroom dance rhythm, characterized by a strong rise and fall action in the basic figures.
This dance rhythm is relatively new to Round Dancing and the figure names coincide with Rumba. Some believe that it originated as the result of the combination of American swing music and Rumba. This occurred when some Harlem jazz musicians and some Latin musicians combined their musical talents and rhythms. Perez Prado recorded a number called Mambo Jambo and this helped popularize the Mambo Rhythm. The term Mambo was borrowed from the African voodoo religion in which the cult priestesses were honored with this name.
